We’ve all seen the “very mindful, very demure” TikTok trend where people hilariously claim to be calm while doing everything from applying deodorant to finishing emails. It’s funny because, let’s be honest, life rarely looks that calm and composed, especially for empaths. We might try to keep it together and stay composed during a stressful day, but absorbing everyone’s energy? That’s where things get really tough. The good news? Real mindfulness and meditation don’t have to look Instagram-perfect. They’re practical tools that help us empaths manage stress and find inner peace in the middle of chaos.
Let me introduce you to Sarah, one of my clients. Sarah used to show up to work feeling all “very demure, very mindful,” but by noon, she was drained. She was absorbing everyone’s energy like a sponge. We worked together on simple mindfulness practices—like taking mindful breaks and grounding herself by releasing energy that wasn’t serving her. After a few weeks, Sarah found her inner calm. No more faking it—she was genuinely less overwhelmed. Now, she’s the one others turn to when things get stressful because she radiates that real mindful, calm vibe.
My own journey with mindfulness wasn’t always smooth either. I tried to look calm on the outside while inside, I was taking on everyone else’s emotions. But through meditation and mindfulness, I’ve learned that, as A Course in Miracles says, “Peace is an attribute in you. You cannot find it outside.” It’s about tuning into that peace within, so no matter what’s happening around you, you stay grounded.
Tips for Incorporating Mindfulness and Meditation as an Empath:
Start Small with Mindful Breathing: Forget about looking calm and demure. Start with just 2 minutes of mindful breathing. Sit quietly, breathe in for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for four. It’s simple but powerful in centering your energy.
Ground Your Energy: As an empath, you naturally collect energy, which can sometimes get stuck and overwhelm you. If you ever feel anxious, take a moment to ground yourself by planting your feet on the floor, breathing deeply, and imagining roots connecting you to the Earth. Just two minutes of mindful grounding can calm and reset your energy.
Take Mindful Pauses Throughout Your Day: Set an alarm to remind yourself to take a mindful pause. Stop, breathe, and ask, “How am I feeling right now?” It’s a quick way to reset and protect your energy from being drained.
Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation: Empaths tend to absorb others’ emotions, but with this practice, you can send love to others while maintaining a protective boundary around yourself. Visualize sending love to someone while keeping your own energy intact. This practice helps you share love without losing yourself in the process.
Create a Sacred Space: You don’t need to look demure while you meditate, but creating a designated space for mindfulness—whether it’s a corner in your bedroom with candles and crystals or a peaceful spot in nature—can help you stay grounded. This is where you go to recharge your energy and reconnect with your inner peace.
Mindfulness and meditation does not have to be Instagram-perfect or TikTok-worthy. They’re tools for staying calm, centered, and balanced as an empath. If you’re an empath struggling with stress and overwhelm, mindfulness and meditation can transform your daily life.
